How to test controller deadzone

  1. Connect a standard-mapped controller.
  2. Select the left or right stick.
  3. Release that stick and keep it untouched.
  4. Start the 3-second sample.
  5. Read the observed center noise and suggested starting deadzone.

What the result means

The test measures the radial distance of each browser-reported stick sample from the exact center and uses the 95th percentile as observed center noise. The suggested starting deadzone adds one percentage point to that observed noise, capped at 100%, then rounds the displayed suggestion up to a whole percentage point.

The radial plot is a zoom of the central 20% radius rather than the full stick travel range, so small center noise remains visible. The suggestion is a heuristic starting value, not a universal correct deadzone. Games and controller software can apply their own response curves, deadzones, and filtering.

Browser and mapping limitations

This browser test measures only controllers that expose the standard gamepad mapping. Non-standard controllers are not assigned guessed physical axes. If the tab becomes hidden or the selected controller disconnects during the sample, the measurement is cancelled and must be restarted.
